Submissions

Each journal published by University of California Press has its own unique submission and author guidelines. If you are interested in submitting to a specific journal, please visit that journal’s pages on this site and review the information provided under the Submit menu option. Any title-specific editorial inquiries, including editorial policies, journal performance statistics, etc., should be directed to the journal’s editorial contact provided in the submission or author guidelines. Non-title specific journal inquiries may be addressed to the Press through our Contact Form

Authors are solely responsible for securing any necessary rights and permissions for material included in their work. University of California Press and editors of its journals are unable to provide guidance on specific rights and permissions questions, including any guidance on Fair Use. Authors are encouraged to review the University of California Press Author Permissions Resources online for more information. 

Open Access 

University of California Press supports various open access initiatives and publishes a number of open access journals. However, at this time, University of California Press does not publish open access articles in any of its paid subscription journals. University of California does frequently make content freely available for periods of time, but that free access should not be confused with open access publishing.

Journal Author Agreements 

All corresponding journal authors are required to sign an author agreement prior to publication, including open access journal authors. Author agreements are available on each journal’s Submit page or in a journal’s author guidelines for review prior to submission or publication. If you are unable to access an author agreement to review prior to submission, please reach out the journal’s listed editorial contact and request an agreement for review.

Re-use of your Published Work 

Authors rights to re-use their published work is outlined in the journal’s author agreement, including: 

  • the right to use the contribution for internal educational, classroom use, or other research purposes of the author’s own institution or company
  • the right to publish the contribution or permit it to be published by other publishers, as part of any book or anthology authored or edited by the author
  • the right to post the contribution on the author’s personal website or within institutional or subject repositories at any time

 

Although authors have the right to post final published PDFs on their personal web sites, University of California Press requests that authors refrain from posting published PDFs of their work on professional networking sites such as academia.edu and ResearchGate. Please note that University of California Press does not consider an individual’s page on social networking sites a personal website. University of California Press does allow authors to post the final accepted manuscript of their contribution (before copyediting and composition) on these sites and link to the published version.
